Getting Older Doesn’t Mean Feeling Like Crap – What You Need to Know
By Kelly Calkins, BCHN® · September 3, 2026

September is Healthy Aging Month, and I want to start with something I hear from women all the time: “I guess this is just what happens when you get older.” But is it really aging? Most women assume it is, but your body Is trying to communicate what it needs from you after 40. The weight that suddenly seems much harder to lose. Waking up at 3:00 a.m. for no apparent reason. Walking into a room and forgetting why you went in there. Feeling tired even though you slept eight hours. Achy joints, stubborn inflammation, digestive changes, mood swings, lower energy, and a body that simply doesn’t respond the way it used to. Yes, our bodies change as we age. But there is a big difference between aging and a body struggling to function optimally. And when we chalk every symptom up to getting older, we can miss what the body has been trying to tell us all along.

What Actually Changes After 40
Hormones shift. Muscle mass becomes easier to lose. Insulin sensitivity can change. Our ability to recover from stress may look different than it did at 25. Sleep, digestion, thyroid function, inflammation, and metabolic health can all be affected by what’s happening throughout the body.
But none of these systems function independently.
This is why I look at health through the lens of the four-dimensional self: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. What you’ve experienced over the last 40, 50, or 60 years matters. Chronic stress matters. How you’ve nourished your body matters. Your emotional health matters. Your connection to yourself and Creator matters.
Aging doesn’t suddenly erase everything that came before it.
Why This Matters
One of the biggest problems I see with women in midlife is that they’ve slowly lowered their expectations for how good they believe they’re allowed to feel.
Maybe you used to wake up ready for the day, and now you need coffee just to become conversational. Your favorite pants don’t fit even though you haven’t dramatically changed how you eat. You lose your train of thought in the middle of a meeting. You avoid pictures because you don’t recognize your body anymore. By the time you get home from work, you have enough energy to stare at the refrigerator and wonder what counts as dinner.
Eventually, you start thinking, Maybe this is just 50.
But symptoms are information.
Fatigue can have many different drivers. So can weight gain, brain fog, inflammation, poor sleep, digestive changes, anxiety, and hormonal symptoms. Two women can have the exact same complaint and need completely different support.
That’s why simply trying harder rarely gives us the answers we’re looking for.
What Healthy Aging Can Actually Look Like
Healthy aging isn’t about trying to make your 50-year-old body behave exactly like your 25-year-old body.
It’s about supporting the body you’re living in now.
I have watched women come in believing they needed more discipline when what they really needed was clarity. Once we identify where their body is struggling and begin supporting those areas, things can start to shift. Their energy improves. Their digestion settles down. They sleep better. The brain fog begins to lift. Their body starts responding again.
Not because we somehow stopped aging, but because we stopped assuming aging was the problem.

Healthy Aging in Real Life
One of my clients came to me feeling like her body had completely changed on her.
She was tired, carrying extra weight she could not seem to move, dealing with inflammation, poor sleep, brain fog, and feeling frustrated because she was already trying to do the right things. She was eating well, paying attention to her health, and still did not feel like herself.
Like so many women, she had started wondering if this was simply what aging looked like now.
But once we stopped looking at each symptom as a separate problem and started looking at what her body was communicating as a whole, the picture became much clearer.
We focused on what her body actually needed instead of pushing harder.

As her body became better supported, her energy improved, the inflammation came down, her sleep became more restorative, her digestion settled, and she started feeling more like herself again.
The biggest shift was not just physical.
She stopped feeling like she was fighting her body.
She understood what was happening, why it was happening, and what to do next.
That is the difference between assuming, “This is just aging,” and actually understanding what your body is asking for.
Three Ways to Support Your Body as You Age
1. Stop Normalizing Every Symptom
Pay attention to patterns instead of dismissing them. When did your energy change? When did the weight start shifting? What was happening when your sleep changed? Did digestive symptoms show up around the same time?
Your symptoms often tell a story when we stop looking at them individually.
2. Protect Your Metabolic Foundation
Muscle, blood sugar stability, protein intake, movement, sleep, hydration, and stress regulation become increasingly important as we age.
You don’t need another extreme plan. You need consistent support that helps your body feel safe, nourished, strong, and metabolically supported.
3. Look Beyond the Physical Body
You cannot separate physical health from the rest of you.
Years of pushing through stress, carrying emotional wounds, living in survival mode, ignoring your own needs, or feeling disconnected from yourself can affect how you experience health today.
Supporting healthy aging means supporting the whole four-dimensional you rather than chasing one symptom at a time.
Aging Is Inevitable. Feeling Terrible Isn’t the Goal.
You are going to age. So am I.
But I don’t believe our goal should be to simply tolerate feeling worse with every birthday.
If your body has been changing and you don’t understand why, this is the time to get curious about what those symptoms are actually communicating.
My Holistic Health Blueprint Session helps map where dysfunction is showing up in your body, how those areas may be connected, and what your body is asking us to pay attention to first.
Because the question isn’t simply, “Am I getting older?”
The better question is: “What does my body need from me now?”
Your Next Step
Maybe you can remember exactly when your body started changing. Or maybe it happened so gradually that one day you looked in the mirror and thought, When did I start feeling like this?
You’re exhausted even though you’re sleeping. The weight around your middle won’t budge even though you’re eating better than most people you know. Your brain feels foggy. Your joints hurt. You’re puffy or inflamed. Foods you used to eat without thinking suddenly leave you bloated or uncomfortable. Your hormones feel all over the place, and some days you simply don’t have the energy, patience, or mental clarity you used to have.
You’ve probably tried fixing some of it already.
You’ve changed your diet. Bought the supplements. Tried exercising more. Maybe you’ve had labs run and been told everything looks fine. And yet you’re standing in your own body thinking, Then why don’t I feel fine?
This is exactly why I offer the Holistic Health Blueprint Session.
Instead of guessing based on symptoms that can have dozens of different causes, we map where dysfunction is showing up in your body, how those areas are connected, and what your body is asking us to pay attention to first.
Because you don’t need another random thing to try.
You need to understand why you don’t feel like yourself anymore.

Upcoming in September: Being the Guardian of Your Heart
Have you become really good at protecting your heart?
Maybe you don’t let people get as close as you used to. You keep your guard up because you’ve learned what happens when you don’t. You handle things yourself because depending on other people has disappointed you before. You forgive, move forward, keep functioning—and tell yourself you’re fine.
But there’s a difference between guarding your heart and building a wall around it.
The disappointments, betrayals, losses, rejection, grief, fear, and relationships you’ve experienced can leave wounds and patterns behind long after you think you’ve moved on. And sometimes the very things you developed to protect yourself are also keeping you from fully experiencing love, connection, trust, joy, and peace.
Our September Connecting with the Creator Online Group Energy Healing Session will focus on Being the Guardian of Your Heart.
During this 90-minute online session, we will connect directly with Creator’s healing energy and allow Creator to identify and restore the emotions, beliefs, wounds, and patterns each person is carrying around the heart back toward original design.
This isn’t about forcing yourself to open your heart or pretending something didn’t hurt. It’s about allowing Creator to heal what caused you to close it in the first place.
